The Council of the European Union has imposed sanctions against the Russian diamond company Alrosa and its CEO.
The Council of the European Union on Wednesday, January 3, added to the sanctions list the Russian diamond mining giant, Alrosa, which accounts for more than 90% of all Russian diamond production, and its CEO Pavel Marinichev. The corresponding decision is published on the website of the EU Council.
“The new listings concern PJSC Alrosa, which is the largest diamond mining company in the world, owned by the Russian state and which accounts for more than 90% of all Russian diamond production, ” said the statement.
The EU Council states that this company is an important part of the economic sector, which provides significant income to the Russian government.
The ban on Russian diamonds is part of the G7’s efforts to develop an internationally coordinated ban on diamond imports, aimed at depriving Russia of this important source of income.
Let’s remember that from 2024, a complete ban on the direct import of Russian non-industrial natural and synthetic diamonds, as well as diamond jewelry, began in the European Union.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia plans to avoid EU sanctions against its diamonds.
Currently, in total, EU sanctions against Russia cover almost 1,950 individuals and legal entities whose assets are frozen and whose owners are prevented from providing services to the EU.
