Ukraine will take such a step if the trade law is violated in favor of pre-election political populism, says Denis Shmygal.
Ukraine will appeal to World Trade Organization (WTO) arbitration Poland’s decision to extend a grain import ban until the end of the year. Prime Minister Denis Shmygal wrote this in Twitter on Tuesday, September 12.
The head of government stressed that Ukraine complies with its obligations both under the Association Agreement with the EU and under WTO law. Our country does not want and does not want to harm Polish farmers and greatly appreciates the support of Polish people and Polish families.
“But in the event of a violation of trade law in favor of pre-election political populism, Ukraine will be forced to apply to WTO arbitration for compensation for damages for violation of the norms of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade,” said Szmigal.
As you know, WTO arbitration is used to resolve trade disputes.
We remind you that today Poland announced that the ban on the import of Ukrainian agricultural products, which should be in effect until September 15, will continue until the end of the year. Four other Eastern European countries may do the same that decision.
The Foreign Ministry called such actions “unacceptable” and emphasized that they do not correspond to the spirit of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU and the principles of the Single Market.
