Prior to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Gazprom booked a smaller volume of Ukrainian gas transportation systems, and then increased it to the maximum, but reduced it again sharply in May.
In January-April, Gazprom reduced gas transit to Ukraine by 35.7% to 9 billion cubic meters. This was stated by Serhiy Makogon, head of the operator of the gas transmission system, in an interview with Ukrinform.

“Compared to transit volumes for the first four months of 2021, in the same months of 2022 they dropped from 14 billion cubic meters to approximately 9 billion cubic meters, despite the transit capacity of the Ukrainian GTS did not go down, “he said.
Makogon pointed out that from the beginning of the year until February 23, Gazprom did not use a significant portion of the booked capacity. Instead, the company increased transit as much as possible immediately after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. By the end of March, the booked capacities were almost fully utilized, but since April, volumes have fallen again-from 109 million cubic meters per day to 45-55 million cubic meters per day.
Since May 11, Gazprom has suspended the transportation of gas through the Sokhranivka connection point due to the Ukrainian warning about the unauthorized withdrawal of gas by the occupiers.
“As an alternative, we propose to move the transit to the Sudzha point, as in 2020. However, Gazprom, without any monetary reasons, as there are all the technical possibilities for the move, ignores this proposal and does not making full use of Sudzha’s booked capacity (77 million cubic meters), ”said Makogon.
In addition, he said that Gazprom had not paid funds for gas transit for June in full, violating the conditions of the “pump or pay” principle. “Now, Gazprom is clearly paying less than it should have under the contract, without any legal basis,” Makogon added.
For violating this rule, Naftogaz initiated pre -arbitration proceedings against Gazprom in a $ 12 billion lawsuit.
