Washington suspects that the 7nm processor for the Mate 60 Pro was created using American technology.
The US government believes that the Chinese company SMIC can, bypassing the sanctions, provide the electronics manufacturer Huawei with American technologies used in the new processor for the Mate 60 Pro smartphone. Bloomberg reported this on September 8.
It was noted that Washington wants to know all the details about the 7nm Chinese chip, which probably could not have been created without the use of American technology.
As you know, Huawei and SMIC are subject to US sanctions, which prevent them from gaining access to the latest chips and equipment for fear of potential Chinese military assistance.
The Mate 60 Pro, powered by a 7nm Kirin 9000s processor and quietly launched last week, shows Beijing’s progress in the industry. Some analysts have suggested that the device could threaten iPhone sales in the country.
The situation has raised concerns among American politicians about the effectiveness of restrictions imposed by Washington against China’s technology sector.
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on September 5 that the government wants to know the exact composition of the Huawei Mate 60 Pro’s processor.
“I will refrain from commenting on the specific chip in question until we have more information about its nature and composition,” he stressed at the briefing.
According to Bloomberg, the processor of the new Huawei smartphone is only a few years behind the current generation.
Recall that Huawei suffered from US sanctions during the presidency of Donald Trump. In May 2019, he signed a decree introducing a state of emergency in the country to protect communications networks.
This paved the way for further measures against doing business with the Chinese company.
