The company plans to test the new network concept during a three-year pilot phase at the Irpen-Bucha-Borodyanka energy hub.
DTEK, an entrepreneurial company of Rinat Akhmetov, has announced plans to carry out post-war reconstruction of energy infrastructure in areas around Kyiv by building a Smart Grid. This is what DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko said at a conference on the restoration of Ukraine in London, the company’s press service reports on Thursday, June 22.

DTEK recalled that the Kyiv region’s energy infrastructure was significantly damaged during the war with Russia. After the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated the Kyiv region in April 2022, more than 1,000 power engineers from DTEK Grids repaired 10,000 km of networks and more than 3,000 transformers in just 45 days to quickly restore electricity . But the network still needs extensive repairs and major upgrades to ensure reliability and continuity, and bring it up to modern European standards.
To do this, DTEK Group wants to attract financing in the amount of 2.4 billion euros as part of a 10-year project to transform the energy infrastructure of the region. The plan, to be approved by the Department of Energy, calls for the construction of a smart grid of 20,000 km of new overhead and underground cables, 250 substations, 6,000 transformers and nearly one million smart meters.
As a result, the average power outage time per year will decrease from 1500 to 100 minutes (SAIDI), and technological losses will decrease three times – from 14% to 5%. All customers will receive smart meters, which will contribute to economical consumption and minimization of costs.
DTEK Grids plans to test the new grid concept during a three-year pilot phase at the Irpen-Bucha-Borodyanka power hub, which suffered the most damage in February 2022. The company intends to attract the necessary funding for the “pilot” at a cost of 145 million euros.
“DTEK aims not only to restore the damaged energy sector, but also to build a more environmentally friendly, innovative and resilient energy system of Ukraine. This investment will provide the Kiev region with a world-class Smart Grid infrastructure that will help the country make the energy transition: integrate renewable generation and prepare Ukraine to become a strong clean energy center of the European Union,” said Maxim Timchenko, speaking about these plans at a conference in London.
A day before it became known that DTEK will take part in the UN initiative to renew Ukraine’s energy sector. Its task is to direct the flow of international capital to finance renewable and transformational processes in the Ukrainian energy sector.
Earlier it was reported that Ukraine could export 15 GW of clean energy. Our country can make a major contribution to Europe’s post-war energy security.
