This is a development that will significantly improve the safety of Soviet-built reactor plants.
American company Westinghouse and Energoatom signed a contract for the design, manufacture and supply of long-term containment cooling systems for the modernization of power units of one of the Ukrainian nuclear power plants. This was announced on June 14 by the press service of the Ukrainian operator.
Westinghouse developed a long-term containment cooling system that “has been a real technological breakthrough and will significantly improve the safety of the Soviet-built VVER-440 reactor plants.”
In the event of an accident, this ensures the long-term maintenance of the reactor core in a safe condition.
“This contract is part of our commitment to help Ukraine achieve a safe and reliable energy future. Safety innovations such as long-term containment cooling systems will increase the security of the VVER-440 reactors. Energoatom a decade ahead,” said Westinghouse President of Operations Dan Sumner.
According to the Westinghouse website, long-term containment cooling systems will be installed in Units 1 and 2 of the Rovno NPP. They should be delivered next year.
It will be remembered that in July last year Energoatom and Westinghouse signed a contract for the construction of blocks at the Khmelnytsky NPP.
