“Several million tons of Ukrainian crops may be lost due to flooding due to the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP. The flooded lands require a full agro-ecological assessment of the soil condition, but only after the water rises. In most of the cases, special land Restoration methods need to be applied,” he said.
Two main blocks of products are planted in the affected lands: vegetables and melons and grains and oilseeds – soybeans, corn, sunflower, wheat.
“Without a source of water supply, it is impossible to talk about the cultivation of vegetable products. The cultivation of grain and oilseeds will take place according to an extensive model with low yields,” said Vysotsky.
He added that it is now difficult to assess the damage on the left bank of the Kherson region, but it is known that several hundred thousand tons of grain are stored there. More than 100 thousand tons of crops were lost on the right bank.
Vysotsky said that the biggest threat to global food security is the inability to grow several million tons of grain and oilseeds without irrigation.
As reported Correspondent.net, On the night of June 6, Russian troops blew up the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. It caused widespread flooding of territories in the Kherson region and caused significant environmental, economic and humanitarian damage to Ukraine.
