Governor Greg Abbott (R) briefly announced the fundraiser on Tuesday after hearing a gunman shot at an elementary school in Texas, killing 19 children and two in the fourth grade.
Abbott confirmed Wednesday his stop at a planned fundraiser at a private home in Walker County, about 300 miles from Rob’s elementary school shooting.
“I stopped on the way back to Austin and informed people that I couldn’t stay, that I had to leave and I wanted them to know what had happened, and return to Austin to continue working on Texas law enforcement. “
On the day of the hunt, Abbott conducted a briefing on bush fires in Taylor County, a spokesman said, quoted as saying. Texas Tribune. According to the publication, he only found out about the Uvalde hunt and provided information on the visit to Taylor County.
Subsequently, he participated in a fundraising campaign in Walker County.
At a press conference acknowledging the suspension of his funding, Abbott addressed former lawmaker Beto O’Rourke, a Democratic candidate who ran against the abbot in the November gubernatorial election. O’Rourke accused Abbott of taking steps to prevent mass shooting.
“It’s up to you,” O’Rourke said to the abbot as law enforcement ushered him into the room. “As long as you don’t choose something else, it will continue. “Someone has to defend the children of this state, otherwise they will continue to kill like they killed yesterday in Uvalde.”
Abbott denied O’Rourke’s allegations of gun politics.
“What they need now more than ever is our romance,” Abbott told the audience. “What they need is to raise all of our fellow Texans and all of our fellow Americans.”
“The reality is horrible as it happened, it could have been worse,” Abbott continued. “The reason it’s not worse is the police did what they were doing: they showed extraordinary courage, they ran with guns to try and save lives.”
Viewers said police were “unprepared” and were reluctant to enter the school after the attack began, the Associated Press reported.
The attacker, who was confined to a courtroom where he shot all of his victims, was later shot by a border patrol team.
