Ukraine has had a system of reduced tariffs since the Soviet era. Over time, this has become a problem that needs to be solved, believes Alexander Kharchenko.
The energy sector in Ukraine can be restored by introducing market prices for electricity for the population and the monetization of subsidies for vulnerable consumers. Alexander Kharchenko, director of the Energy Research Center, said this in a commentary for ExPro on Thursday, May 18.
In his opinion, Ukraine has had a system of reduced tariffs since the Soviet era. Over time, this has become a problem that needs to be addressed.
“Its correct decision is only to introduce market prices for the population. This is the only correct way to remove corruption from the energy sector, which is estimated at hundreds of millions… Until the introduction of normal market price and subsidies are not profitable, it is impossible to “heal” the energy sector “, – said Kharchenko.
In his opinion, market prices will stimulate the population of Ukraine to energy-efficient consumption.
Recall that in April the government of Ukraine postponed the increase in electricity prices for the population for at least another month – until the end of May. Now the population pays UAH 1.44 per kWh if the consumption is less than 250 kWh per month, and UAH 1.68 per kWh if more than 250 kWh per month is consumed.
At the same time, the Minister of Energy German Galushchenko said that the change in electricity tariffs will help upgrade the energy system in the new autumn-winter season.
