The external debt of the public sector increased by $12.1 billion and reached $69.1 billion, or 46.6% of GDP.
The size of Ukraine’s total foreign debt in 2022 increased by $2.3 billion to the level of $132.0 billion. In relation to GDP, the amount of debt increased throughout the year from 64.6% to 89.0%, the National Bank reported on Wednesday, March 22.
In particular, the external debt of the public sector increased by $12.1 billion and reached $69.1 billion (46.6% of GDP). External liabilities of the private sector decreased by $9.8 billion and reached $62.9 billion (42.4% of GDP).
External liabilities of the general government sector increased by $14.1 billion to $65.3 billion (44.0% of GDP) due to the net attraction of loans from international partners ($14.7 billion) and from the IMF (2.3 billion dollar).
The external debt of the National Bank decreased by $2.0 billion and as of December 31, 2022 reached $3.8 billion.
Commercial bank debt decreased by $1.4 billion to $2.1 billion.
External debt of other sectors of the economy decreased by $6.9 billion to $40.2 billion (27.1% of GDP).
At the end of 2022, in terms of the geographical structure of private sector debt in unsecured loans (including intercompany debt), Cyprus remained the country’s main creditor: its share increased by 2.6 pp over the year. and reached 48.7%.
At the end of 2022, the US dollar remained the main currency of Ukraine’s external borrowings: 55.7% of the total external debt, however, its share decreased by 5.6% throughout the year. The share of liabilities in SDRs to the IMF also decreased by 0.3%. p. – up to 10.9% and the share of debt in Hryvnia by 1.5 and. p. – up to 1.9%. At the same time, the share of borrowings from the euro increased: from 23.0% to 29.2%.
Recall that in January 2023, the amount of public and guaranteed debt of Ukraine increased by more than $5 billion and exceeded $116 billion.
Earlier, the payment calendar of Ukraine’s debts in the current year was published. In total, the country must pay more than $13 billion.
