The price of chicken will face new hiking due to intense rains that caused floods and affected various regions.
Poultry farmers South (Avisur) spokesman Alex Geri said the possible increase will come as the floods have caused losses in production.
“Natural events have affected several companies. In the north we have Chepén, chickens positions have been flooded, in Trujillo we have affected companies, and the few rescued chickens cannot be sold,” he told RPP.
The union representative notes that other consequences are added to this situation, such as a shortage of soybeans due to the blockade and bird flu.
“There is demand, but there is no supply and there won’t be because of all these things that are happening and because of which the price fluctuates, we don’t want it to skyrocket, these are indirect things that we cannot control. ” He said.
Geri adds that the authorities are delaying vaccinations birds against bird flu, a situation that has already led to the death of several farm birds.
Avisur had previously warned that the price of chicken could reach 15 S/15 in April due to the consequences faced by poultry farmers, who would lose about half a million chickens due to bird flu alone.
So far, figures from the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) show that a kilo of chicken is selling for S$12.79 in retail markets in metropolitan Lima.
Meanwhile in Piura, the region’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry points out that chicken It sells for between £14 and £16 per kilo, and a box of 30 eggs costs £19.
