Unblocking exports through the ports will bring Ukraine $20 billion – more than financial aid from the United States or the European Union. Therefore, this issue needs to be systematically dealt with and brought to the UN meetings. This opinion was expressed by the head of the office of the CEO of the Metinvest group, Alexander Vodoviz, at the Forbes Exporters Summit on Thursday, March 16.
“Today the Ministry of Finance has obtained $100-500 million in external financing – and this is an event. But the opening of ports for all kinds of products will provide $20 billion according to the most conservative estimates. That is , this is more than what the US and EU are giving us. Is this amount of effort worth it? Probably, yes. But why is the solution to this issue not a priority for us. Why is it not raised in the UN meetings? We keep collecting crumbs from the table, but we don’t see a big pie to deal with,” Vodoviz emphasized.
Earlier, business representatives and the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine appealed to the UN and Turkey in a call to ensure free navigation in the Black Sea region and unblock Ukrainian ports. In case the Russian Federation does not agree, its ships must undergo the same checks as the Ukrainian ones – after all, they can transport military cargo.
And the directors of three ports – Pivdenny, TIS-Coal and Tis-Ruda – called on President Volodymyr Zelensky to extend the grain corridor to metal products. They said that it will strengthen the Hryvnia and the economy, because one ship with iron ore provides $ 14 million in export earnings, and Ukraine can send 200 such ships a year.
Recall that the Ministry of Infrastructure called ports an important element in the stability of Ukraine’s economy and its growth.
It was also reported that now more than 50 ships are blocked in Ukrainian ports. They carry hundreds of crew members and 670 thousand tons of various cargoes, including grain.
