Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, who served in President Bill Clinton’s administration, explained on Wednesday why he thinks America’s Second Civil War is continuing.
Reich, in a major essay written by GuardiaHa that the clash of states would be “no less of a war than a kind of benign separation, similar to those unhappy married people who do not want to suffer the trauma of a formal or divorce. “
The rift between Democratic and Republican voting states is “accelerating” and each side is increasingly acting under different laws, he said. While red states are trying to remove the right to abortion, blue states are trying to code them and even help people living in neighboring red states.
The Reich, however, did not plan to divide America into two separate nations.
Instead, it envisioned a “difficult bilateral decision to separate most of the issues, but remain relevant to some important issues (such as national defense, monetary policy and civil and political rights)”.
“America is going to be America again.” But it’s fast becoming two versions of America, ”he concludes.“ The open question is like all the couples who separate from each other: How do they find a way to be kind to each other?
