Earthquakes registered in Syria and Turkeyin early February, they not only left over 50,000 dead, but more than $34 billion in losses, according to The World Bank.
According to the international organization, although the calculation is $34 billion, the reconstruction of the south-east of the country could cost at least twice as much.
“The report acknowledges that salvage and recovery costs will be much higher (than those caused by damage), potentially twice as much, and that losses Gross domestic product (GDP) will be added to this value,” the institution explained in a statement.
number could rise
However, the figure will not be static, because due to the recording of the latest aftershocks damage they could get up.
Of the cataloged damages, slightly more than half – about $18 billion – are damages to residential buildings. The World Bank estimates that about 1.25 million people are temporarily homeless due to damage to their homes.
The institution had already announced on Feb. 9 a $1,780 million initial relief package to help with reconstruction and rescue efforts.
Earthquakes that have occurred over the past 6 days with a magnitude of 7.7 and 7.6 have claimed the lives of more than 44,000 people in Turkey alone. Syria, which was also hit by earthquakes, has recorded nearly 6,000 deaths.
These unusually strong tremors may have caused the rearrangement of several tectonic plates, which is now manifested in moderate earthquakes in neighboring areas. (EFE)
