The total losses of Ukrainian business from the Russian invasion reach tens of billions of dollars, journalists say.
SCM is currently the only Ukrainian company that has decided to take legal action to recover damages caused by Russia. The Voice of America reported this, indicating that the losses of the Ukrainian business reached tens of billions of dollars.
“SCM is currently the only Ukrainian company that has decided to seek compensation for damages caused by Russia in court. At the moment, they are estimated at 17-20 billion dollars,” the publication said.
SCM Communications Director Natalya Yemchenko, in a commentary to the Voice of America, states that the most significant damage was caused by the Russian invaders in Mariupol: steel mills were destroyed, equipment and finished products were stolen and brought to Russia.
“In Mariupol, we have about 30 businesses of different sizes that form an ecosystem. During the mass invasion, more than 30,000 people worked for them. Business is interested in justice as a tool to prevent future wars and crimes,” he said.
According to Yemchenko, SCM owner Rinat Akhmetov is the first Ukrainian businessman to file a case against Russia at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to bring the aggressor to justice. In addition, he added that DTEK has also filed a case against Russia at the permanent international court of arbitration in The Hague (Netherlands) regarding the seizure of energy assets in Crimea. This process has been going on since 2018.
It will be remembered that Akhmetov filed a case against Russia at the ECHR, it became known at the end of June last year. Before this, Akhmetov said that as a result of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, SCM enterprises lost assets of about $ 20 billion.
