Ukrainian Railways received the European Railway Award Rail Champion 2023 for perseverance and hard work during the war.
Ukrzaliznytsia and its team were awarded the title of Rail Champion of the Year – Rail Champion Award 2023 – for their exceptional resilience and work during the war. The award of the Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies CER and the Union of European Railway Industry UNIFE was presented on Tuesday, January 31, in Brussels to the head of the passenger direction of Ukrainian railways Oleksandr Pertsovsky.
“Since the beginning of the war, Ukrzaliznytsia has been a lifeline for millions of displaced people and ensured the delivery of essential aid and supplies throughout the country. Working in the most difficult and dangerous conditions, UZ employees, including their heroic efforts, ensured the movement of transport as per schedule,” said the award organizing committee. “These efforts demonstrate the tremendous resilience of the rail system and its resilience in crises, and the importance of strong rail companies.”
European rail workers emphasized that this award expresses the solidarity and support of the entire European Union community.
European Railway Award
The European Railway Award has been awarded annually since 2007. It is accompanied by a sum of money, which the winner donates to a charity organization of his choice.
The jury of the European Railway Award is made up of rail and train industry leaders, EU politicians, past winners and journalists. They choose the winner by voting.
Community of European railway and infrastructure companies CER unites about 70 railway companies in Europe – this is 71% of the entire length of the European railway network, 76% of European freight business and 92% of train passenger traffic in Europe.
The Union of the European Railway Industry UNIFE represents more than 100 leading European enterprises in the design, manufacture, maintenance and repair of railway systems. UNIFE brings together the national railway associations of 12 European countries.
