Today, members of the board of directors of the Regional Federation of Folklore and Culture of Puno (FRFCP) decided to postpone the festival of the Virgin of Candelaria in the midst of social conflicts.
The celebration was planned for February, but due to the socio-political situation in which the country is located, it was decided to suspend these celebrations.
But how much can Puno lose if these celebrations are cancelled?
Peruvian Association of Travel and Travel Agencies (Apavit-Puno) warns that around S$111 million could not be raised if the next Virgen de la Candelaria festival dates are cancelled.
“That would mean the loss of all tourist network because the celebration of Candelaria revitalizes all sectors. There are expenses for planes, hotels, excursions, preparation of typical costumes, light suits, dancers’ clothes, transport and more,” said Raquel Asillo, president of the tourism institution, a few weeks later.
It is worth noting that the last week of the Candelaria Festival alone sees the region experience the largest influx of tourists spending between S$1,500 and S$2,000 for an average stay of three to four days.
According to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Fistthe protests are causing the region to suffer losses of 450 million soles a day.
The sector hardest hit by the social protests is tourism, with tourists canceling their trips, with economic damage estimated at 250,000 soles a day.
