The head of the Hungarian government said the EP should be dissolved in its current form because of a corruption scandal.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said the European Parliament should be abolished in its current form because a recent corruption scandal involving several EP members casts doubt on the institution’s credibility, AP reported.
He made such a statement at the annual international press conference in Budapest.
“Hungarians want to dissolve the European Parliament in its current form,” Orban said. “To what extent the reputation of the European Parliament in Hungary has suffered, it is easy to answer: not at all, because there is nowhere to go lower.”
It was noted that such statements followed after the European Union froze more than 12 billion euros in funding for Hungary due to fears that the Orbán government was applying tough measures regarding the independence of the judiciary, oversight of official corruption and violation of the rights of minorities. .
Tensions between Budapest and Brussels have been exacerbated by the Hungarian government’s lobbying to ease sanctions against the Russian Federation imposed for its war against Ukraine.
Remember, on Friday, December 9, the Belgian police detained the MEP from Greece, Eva Kaili, in Brussels as part of an investigation into the possible corruption of Qatar, host of the World Cup. Along with Kylie, the Belgian police detained several other people.
