The Russian leadership has conflicting views on the advisability of a winter offensive against Ukraine.
This was reported to AFP by a high-ranking US official.
According to him, Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly called on the Russian military leadership to present him with “short and medium-term” plans to continue the war in Ukraine.
The United States will adjust and adapt quickly if the nature of the Russian invasion changes, the US official said.
A senior US State Department official and Reuters said Tuesday that Russia has conflicting views about whether to resume its offensive in Ukraine. He reiterated that Washington will continue to support Kyiv no matter what scenario plays out.
The 10-month conflict sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has escalated into the biggest conflict in Europe since World War II, killing tens of thousands, driving millions from their homes and leaving cities in ruins.
But since the summer, the Russian invasion has been hit hard by a string of casualties in a Ukrainian counteroffensive that has recaptured occupied territories and forced Moscow to partially mobilize another 300,000 men.
There are certainly some (in Russia) who, in my opinion, would like to continue with (new) offensive operations in Ukraine. There are others who have real doubts about Russia’s ability to do this, a State Department spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity, told reporters in Washington.
