The most important thing for the EU is to ensure the implementation of the already introduced restrictions and not to allow them to be circumvented, Virginijus Sinkevičius emphasizes.
The anti-Russian sanctions of the European Union have reached their “ceiling” and now the most important thing is to implement them. This was announced on December 22 in an interview with the Lithuanian radio station Ziniu radijas by the European Commissioner for the Environment Virginijus Sinkevičius, LRT reports.
“I have been saying for a long time that the sanctions have reached their ceiling, and there will be no changes, no changes to these sanctions,” he said.
The official stressed that one of the most important steps is the denial of Russian gas to Europe.
“I think the biggest steps have been taken in terms of energy and getting just under 9% of the 40% gas mix in the European Union with Russia. I think these are the biggest steps that will only increase the pressure (on Russia – ed .),” Sinkevičius clarified.
According to him, the most important thing for Brussels now is to ensure the implementation of the restrictions that have already been imposed and to avoid a possible evasion of sanctions.
“Perhaps, the most important thing now is to implement what has already been adopted, to ensure that it is implemented. So that Russia cannot avoid sanctions through other states,” said the European Commissioner.
It can be recalled that after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU introduced nine sanctions packages affecting various sectors of the Russian economy, as well as a wide range of businessmen, politicians and officials.
