crematorium workers Beijing confirmed on Friday that their establishments are overwhelmed by an unprecedented wave of COVID-19 cases in China which, according to the authorities, will soon reach rural areas of the country.
The epidemic is spreading rapidly across the country, a week after most of the medical restrictions that had been in place for almost three years were lifted.
The authorities admit that it is now “impossible” for them to calculate the number of cases.
“We cremate 20 bodies a day, mostly elderly people. Many have recently fallen ill,” a crematorium worker told AFP. “Of the 60 who work here, more than 10 have a positive attitude towards COVID-19but we have no choice, as there is a lot of work,” he added.
Workers from two other funeral homes in Beijing contacted AFPindicated that their facilities are open 24 hours a day, offering same-day cremation services in response to high demand.
Another such establishment indicated that its waiting list was one week.
Official data
However, the official figures do not include any deaths related to COVID-19 from December 4th.
On Friday, the COVID-19 organization called on local governments to step up surveillance and medical care for people returning to their homes in rural areas ahead of the January New Year holidays.
This event annually causes the largest population displacement in the world. It is expected to be even higher this year as inter-provincial travel restrictions have been lifted.
Chinese state media and health experts downplay the dangers of the omicron variant, with respiratory expert Zhong Nanshan suggesting a renaming COVID-19 for the “viral cold”.
Yet millions of older people have not been vaccinated, and antigen tests and antipyretics are in short supply. (AFP)
