A former US Marine who confessed to the rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl in 2000 was executed on Wednesday in the state Mississippi.
Thomas Edwin Loden58, was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m. local time after being lethally injected at Parchman Prison in the southern state.
Loden pleaded guilty to kidnapping Lisa Gray in 2000, who was isolated on a rural road after her car suffered a flat tire.
The former Marine, gunnery sergeant and recruiter for that force, admitted to raping her several times in his van before strangling and then strangling her.

Thomas Edwin Loden According to court documents, he was found on the side of the road the next day with the words “sorry” stamped into his chest.
In 2001, the man was sentenced to death. His performance is the first in Mississippi this year and the second since 2013.
Loden became the 18th prisoner to be executed in the US in 2022.
The death penalty is legal in about half of the US states. USA, but this year it was applied only in five: Alabama, Arizona, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. (AFP)
