A number of countries still have questions about the ninth package of anti-Russian sanctions, said Charles Michel.
The Committee of Permanent Representatives of the European Union (COREPER) may decide on the ninth package of sanctions against Russia on Thursday. This was said by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, Interfax-Ukraine reports on December 15.
“We hope to complete the work on the ninth package of sanctions. I am sure it is possible, but it will have to be worked on in the coming hours,” Michel said before the European Council summit.
He said that not only Hungary has questions about the sanctions package, but also a number of other countries.
“It still needs to be studied, in this regard we are looking forward to the meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper), which is expected to take place today at the same time as the European Council summit so that we can make a decision today,” added Michel.
The previous day, the Italian newspaper Sole 24 Ore, citing a European diplomatic source, reported that the permanent representatives of EU countries on Wednesday could not complete the negotiation of the ninth package of sanctions against Russia. According to the publication, among the remaining issues remains “food security: Italy and other countries insist on the need to provide a number of exceptions to the regime of sanctions for the import of fertilizers from Russia. This is necessary in order not to limit the supply of fertilizer to developing countries.”
At the same time, the interlocutor of the newspaper assured that he expects the approval of a package of sanctions at the level of permanent representatives in the current week. “There are reasons to believe that the permanent representatives will give the green light before the end of the week,” he said.
Earlier, the media reported who will fall under the ninth package of EU sanctions. The restrictions will affect 144 individuals. Among them are Russian celebrities, TV presenters and bloggers.
