The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) immediately proceeded to close the Special Surveillance Mission in Ukraine. It was reported on the organization’s website on Thursday, April 28th.
This decision was announced by OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau and Secretary General of the organization Helga Maria Schmid.
“This is not an easy decision. We have explored all possible options through political dialogue with the participating States to achieve the extension of the mandate of the Special Monitoring Mission, but the position of the Russian Federation has left us with no choice but to take steps to close the Mission, “the Polish minister commented in the statement. .
At the same time, Rau said the OSCE will strive to continue its activities in the country in accordance with existing obligations under the mandate.
For his part, Schmid stressed that the mission has played an important role in Ukraine over the past eight years and stressed that the OSCE will do everything to free mission members from captivity in Russia.
Earlier, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Oleksiy Reznikov said that the current international security institutions do not have the power to prevent a Russian war against Ukraine. In this regard, the UN and the OSCE must be replaced by more effective organizations.
