The searches took place at the headquarters of the Renaissance party and the consulting firm McKinsey, which provided services to the party.
The National Financial Prosecutor’s Office of France on Wednesday, December 14, conducted searches at the headquarters of the Renaissance party of current President Emmanuel Macron. Investigations were also conducted at the office of the consulting firm McKinskey in a case of possible illegal financing of his election campaigns. This was reported by the French news agency AFP.
The searches were prompted by “inappropriate campaign accounts” and “reductions in accounting entries” related to McKinsey’s activities during the 2017 and 2022 election campaigns and possible favoritism toward the company.
Several McKinsey consultants worked as unpaid volunteers during Macron’s 2017 election campaign.
Prosecutors are trying to determine whether there were hidden costs in the campaign and whether the firm enjoyed special access and treatment afterward in securing lucrative government contracts.
The investigations were initiated by the French National Financial Prosecutor’s Office in October 2022 after the French Senate decided that public spending on consulting services doubled from 2018 to 2021, i.e. during Macron’s first term.
The news agency recalled that the use of expensive services by foreign consulting firms, which the French media called McKinseygate, shocked many French voters.
It should be noted that in France, eight deputies of the pro-presidential party appealed to the lower house of the country’s parliament with a request to create a committee to investigate the possible financing of French political forces by Russia.
