Colombian authorities arrested and prosecuted 10 people in an operation to combat the wildlife trade, where they confiscated animals of 164 species, including the jaguar, toucan, parrot, marmoset and squirrel, prosecutors said Tuesday.
This is an operation in the department of Cordoba, in Colombian Caribbeanaccording to which the prosecutor’s office and the police detained these men, who “apparently were engaged in the trade in wild animals, as well as their illegal commercialization in the country,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
All detainees who were subjected to non-custodial measures, except for one who was under house arrest, were charged with criminal conspiracy to commit a crime, animal abuse and illegal use of natural resources.
The illegal activity, according to investigative work, was carried out for 50 years and was a network where several families profited from this activity “and even supplied species of fauna to human traffickers in other cities Colombia”.
To “subdue” the species, they bathed them in cold water and, in the case of birds, tied their legs with ropes, while the mammals kept them bound with chains and bows.
They even tried to deceive traders by dyeing the plumage of some birds with chemicals to make them look like they belonged to other species, and thus achieve a higher market value. black market.
As a result, during the operational-search activities carried out in various villages of the city of Cordova managed to catch a total of 160 birds of different species (toucans, parrots, budgerigars, parrots, macaws), Jaguarfour tamarins and one squirrel, for a total of 164 animal species, according to information from prosecution.
