The new fighter, equipped with the most modern weapons, is planned to be commissioned in the mid-2030s.
After the Russian attack on Ukraine, the whole world is actively arming. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a new joint project with Italy and Japan to develop the next-generation Tempest multirole fighter. The new fighter, equipped with the most modern weapons, is planned to be commissioned in the mid-2030s.
Characteristics of the fighter
The name of the new fighter is in honor of one of the most powerful fighters of the Second World War, the British Hawker Tempest.
The new Tempest is designed to replace the fourth-generation Typhoon multirole fighter, which was created in the 1980s, but is still in service in many countries, including the UK.
Work on a new fighter is underway. The designers were tasked with creating a combat vehicle that would be distinguished by high speed and maneuverability, combined with stealth.
The aircraft is equipped with modern electronic equipment, including a powerful computer with artificial intelligence functions, which will help the pilot in emergency situations that require complex and immediate decisions.
In theory, such a fighter can even fly in full autopilot mode. In addition, it will be able to carry hypersonic missiles on board.
Partners
In this development, Britain was joined by Italy and Japan. The program to create a new fighter remains open to new participants. In principle, France, Germany and Spain, which are now working on their own joint project, as well as the United States, could join it.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak officially launched the first phase of the program to develop the new fighter on Friday during a visit to RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.
“The security of the United Kingdom, now and for generations to come, will always be of utmost importance to our government,” the Prime Minister said on the eve of the base visit. “This is why we must always be at the forefront of defense technology, ahead of those who wish us harm. The international cooperation with Italy and Japan that we are announcing today is designed to do that and to re-emphasize that the Euro-Atlantic and Asia-Pacific security are inseparable.”
“The new generation of combat aircraft we are developing will protect us and our allies around the world by building on the strength of our leading defense industry, helping to create new jobs and save lives,” said by Rishi Sunak.
