Peru’s former president sought asylum in Mexico after the impeachment

The Mexican Foreign Ministry confirmed the request and said it had begun consultations with Peruvian authorities.

Suspended Peruvian President Pedro Castillo has requested political asylum in Mexico. This was announced on Thursday, December 8, by Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrarda in Twitter.

In his publication, the head of the Mexican Foreign Ministry also presented the petition itself, signed by lawyer Victor Lendo.

Castillo confirmed that he submitted an asylum application, which was received at the Mexican embassy on Thursday morning.

Ebrard noted that consultations have begun with the Peruvian authorities.

The previous day, Peruvian police detained Castillo, who had previously been impeached by the country’s parliament.

Recall that at the beginning of the year, the Prime Minister of Peru resigned three days after his appointment.
