Representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross conducted a two-day visit to Ukrainian prisoners of war last week. This was reported by the press service of the ICRC on Thursday, December 8.
It is indicated that another visit to captured Ukrainians is taking place this week.
“At the same time, visits to Russian prisoners of war took place, the next ones are scheduled for the end of the month,” the report said.
ICRC staff are in contact with the families of prisoners of war and deliver messages from them. In addition, books, personal hygiene products, blankets and warm clothes were brought to the prisoners of war.
“Such visits are essential for maintaining humanity during a brutal international armed conflict. We can check how prisoners of war are being treated and give their families up-to-date information. I look forward to the visits this will initiate more regular access to all prisoners of war,” said the ICRC president. Mirjana Spolyaric.
It is noted that, in accordance with Geneva Convention III, all prisoners of war are entitled to regular visits by ICRC delegates. Representatives of the organization shall have unhindered access and the opportunity to meet with all prisoners of war and no witnesses, wherever they may be.
Recall that on December 6, 60 defenders of Ukraine returned from captivity. Among them were 34 defenders of Mariupol, including 14 people from Azovstal.
And since February 24, about 1.4 thousand Ukrainians have been returned from Russian captivity. President Volodymyr Zelensky recently met with some of them.
