Delta Air Lines, facing another attempt to reunite its flight attendants, will begin reimbursing cabin crew on board, the first for a major U.S. airline.
In the U.S. airline industry, the hourly fee for flight attendants will begin when all passengers are seated and the aircraft doors are closed.
Delta said the change will begin June 2 on all flights.
During the flight, Kristen Manion Taylor, Delta’s senior vice president, said in a flight assistance memorandum that the new payment “gives you more awareness of the importance of your role in ensuring a safe, secure and timely start on each flight. ” . “
The boarding salary is 50% of the normal salary.
The change comes after Delta plans to increase ride time from 35 minutes to 40 minutes.
Menon Taylor said that after testing last fall and receiving feedback from flight attendants, he vowed not to set new boarding times at no additional charge for cabin crew.
Delta said the new boarding pay will add to the 4% increase on aircraft carriers announced in March, which will take effect later this week.
Delta, based in Atlanta, has successfully campaigned to defeat several attempts to organize its 20,000 flight attendants. The Flight Attendees Association – which has been making the most recent organizational effort at Delta for more than two years but has yet to get enough support to vote – took the board’s salary.
“This new policy is a direct result of our organization,” the union said in a statement posted on its website. “The closer we get to voting for our union, the more nervous the leadership is.”
The union is the pilot of United, Alaska, Spirit and up to a dozen small airlines. Delta said none of the airlines pay the cabin crew to board.
Unions make up 82% to 86% of workers in the United States, United States and Southwest, but only 20% of Delta’s 83,000 employees, according to the regulatory document. Delta 13,000 pilots are represented by the Airline Pilots Association. Delta’s Endeavor Air regional flight affiliated aircraft has been merged.
