German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held the first telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin since mid-September and called on the dictator to withdraw troops from Ukraine to end the war diplomatically.
The hour-long conversation was devoted to Russia’s ongoing aggressive war against Ukraine and its consequences, the press and information department of the German federal government said.
Scholz during the conversation noted the determination of Germany to support Ukraine in ensuring its defense against Russian aggression.
According to the Kremlin press service, Putin told the German Chancellor that “missile strikes against certain targets on the territory of Ukraine” are “a forced and inevitable reaction in response to Kiev’s provocative attacks against Russian civilian infrastructure, including the Crimean bridge and energy facilities.”
In addition, Putin called “destructive” the line of Western states that provide Kyiv with assistance with weapons and train the Ukrainian military.
According to Moscow, “all this, as well as comprehensive political and financial support for Ukraine, leads to the fact that Kyiv completely rejects the idea of any negotiations.”
Scholz emphasized Germany’s determination to support Ukraine in ensuring its ability to defend itself against Russian aggression, and also insisted that a diplomatic solution, including the withdrawal of Russian troops, must be found as soon as possible.
Scholz and Putin also talked about the food situation in the world, especially aggravated as a result of Russia’s aggressive war. Both “emphasized the important role of the recently updated Grains Agreement under the auspices of the United Nations and agreed to keep in touch”.
