The US is trying to keep Beijing out of the war and support Taiwan, but fighting is not out of the question.
US authorities have acknowledged the possibility of China starting a war against Taiwan and are taking steps to prevent it. This was announced on Friday, December 2, by US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman in a seminar at the American University in Washington.
“A war between China and Taiwan is possible. It could happen because Chinese leader Xi Jinping now has full control of China after the last party congress,” Sherman said.
He also recalled the words of Xi, who spoke of his intention to reunify Taiwan with mainland China peacefully, but made it clear that he would use force if the situation required.
“Therefore, our efforts are aimed at containing this, to convince China not to move in this direction,” said the assistant secretary of state. He also added that at the same time, the United States is providing support to Taiwan so that it has the means to defend itself.
Earlier, the Chinese Ministry of Defense warned the United States of its readiness to fight for Taiwan.
