Serbia’s vulnerability to Russian influence is higher, but the country is an EU ally, Oliver Vargei said.
In order to join the European Union, Serbia must not only carry out the necessary reforms, but also impose sanctions against the aggressor country, Russia. This was said by the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Oliver Vargei in an interview for Euronews.
“I don’t think they (Serbia – ed.) have the right not to join the sanctions. We see that Serbia is in a special position compared to other members of the Western Balkans,” said Vargei.
At the same time, he recalled that Serbia still needs to finish the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue line in order to reach an agreement on the conditions for coexistence.
“We see that Serbia’s vulnerability to Russian influence is higher. We must not forget that this country is our ally, we must treat Serbia in this way. He voted with us in all sessions of the UN General Assembly , which condemned Russia for its actions in Ukraine. For me, this is a very strong political signal,” said Vargei.
Earlier, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic called the EU a strategic path for Serbia. He admitted that without investment in Europe and a political and legal environment, his country would not achieve anything.
At the same time, Vučić said that Serbia will not impose sanctions against Russia because of the war against Ukraine. According to him, this will only happen if “the sword of Damocles hangs in Belgrade.”
In this regard, Germany demanded that Serbia choose between the European Union and Russia.
