The European Union has demanded that Twitter have clear rules on content moderation and abandon its arbitrary approach to reinstating banned users.
The European Union could block Twitter, owned by American billionaire Elon Musk, on its territory if it does not comply with EU content moderation rules, the Financial Times reports.
So, on November 30, the head of the European industry, Thierry Breton, held a video meeting with Musk, where he said that in case of non-compliance with the rules, Twitter could be blocked or fined of up to 6% of global turnover.
“Twitter must adhere to a checklist of rules, including not taking an arbitrary approach to restoring banned users, aggressively spreading disinformation, and agreeing to an ‘extensive independent audit’ of the platform until next year,” the publication wrote.
It is also noted that among the EU requirements there is a provision of clear criteria on which users can be banned.
It was previously reported that global brands are refusing to advertise on Twitter because of Musk’s policies.
