The parcel that broke out at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid was sent to the ambassador’s address.
More serious consequences of the explosion were avoided thanks to the reaction and professional actions of the personnel of the diplomatic institution.
Despite initial media reports of an exploding “letter”, in reality it is a package much larger than a letter with documents.
This mailing, addressed personally to Ukraine’s ambassador to Spain, Serhiy Pohoreltsev, aroused the suspicions of the ambassador’s secretary because it did not have a return address and did not look like mail addressed to diplomats.
The secretary handed over the “mail” to the commandant – that is, the employee responsible, among other things, for guarding the embassy.
There was a box in the package, so the commandant got suspicious and he himself – so that no one was around – went out with this “mail” into the yard before opening it. And as soon as I opened it, I heard that something clicked there, immediately threw it away, and even then I heard an explosion, – said the Ukrainian Ambassador to Spain, Serhiy Pohoreltsev, in a commentary to EP.
Despite the fact that the commandant of the embassy no longer held the box in his hands, the explosion injured his hands and says that he received something like a shell shock.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said today that after providing medical assistance, the commandant of the embassy returned back to the diplomatic organization from the hospital. The minister ordered to tighten the security of Ukrainian consulates and embassies.
Earlier, Rakurs reported that on November 30, an explosion occurred near the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid.
