The Pentagon has signed a contract with Raytheon Missiles and Defense to buy six more NASAMS systems.
The Pentagon and the American company Raytheon Technologies signed a $1.2 billion contract to buy the NASAMS air defense system for Ukraine. This was announced on Wednesday, September 30, by the press service of the Pentagon.
“As part of the fifth package of initiatives to assist Ukraine in the field of security, the US Army entered into a $1.2 billion contract with Raytheon Missiles and Defense to supply Ukraine with six NASAMS batteries, training and support to logistics for the Armed Forces and Security Forces of Ukraine,” the statement said.
The United States has approved the transfer of eight NASAMS air defense systems to Ukraine to protect against Russian missile and drone attacks. Ukraine received the first delivery of two NASAMS air defense systems in November. Others will be delivered in the following months once they are built.
NASAMS is a mobile anti-aircraft missile system with a short and medium range, designed to deal with air targets at low and medium altitudes. It is capable of destroying drones, ballistic and cruise missiles, helicopters, aircraft and other airborne targets. The complex was developed by the Norwegian company Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace and the American company Raytheon Technologies.
Recall that in mid-November it was reported that the NASAMS air defense system was in service and guarding the skies over Ukraine.
