More than 20,000 civilians and more than 100,000 soldiers have been killed in Ukraine so far, the head of the European Commission said.
The European Commission proposes to create a special court to investigate Russia’s crimes in Ukraine, as well as the conditions for using frozen Russian assets to restore Ukraine. about it in his speech on Wednesday, November 30, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke.
“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has caused death, destruction and untold suffering. We all remember the horrors that happened in Bucha. Approximately over 20,000 civilians and over 100,000 military personnel have been killed to date. Payments must be made of Russia for these heinous crimes, including the crime of aggression against a sovereign state. While we will continue to support the International Criminal Court, we propose the creation of a special court, with the support of the UN, to investigate and prosecute the crime of Russian aggression,” he said in a video message.
Von der Leyen also stressed that Russia must pay financially for the destruction caused by Ukraine.
“The damage inflicted on Ukraine is estimated at 600 billion euros. Russia and its oligarchs must pay the debt to Ukraine for the destruction and cover the costs of restoring the country. And we have the means to pay Russia,” he says.
According to the President of the European Commission, 300 billion euros of reserves of the Central Bank of Russia have been blocked and 19 billion euros of Russian oligarchs have been frozen.
“In the short term, we can create a structure with our partners to manage these funds and invest them. Then we will use the proceeds for Ukraine, and when the sanctions are lifted, the these funds are available so that Russia will pay full compensation for the destruction caused in Ukraine “We will work on an international agreement with our partners to make this possible. Together we can find a legislative way to do this. The terrible crimes in Russia will not go unpunished,” the head of the EC emphasized.
Russia must pay for its horrific crimes.
We will cooperate with the ICC and help set up a special court to try Russia’s crimes.
