Britain already had a similar experience, because in London in the winter of 1942 the Declaration of St. James – the document with which the path to the Nuremberg Tribunal began.
Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska has called on Britain to lead efforts to set up a special tribunal to punish Russia for war crimes. This was announced on Tuesday, November 29, by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.
He mentioned that it was for this purpose that his wife was visiting the United Kingdom.
“On behalf of all Ukrainians and Ukrainian women who have suffered from Russian aggression, she called on the UK to lead international efforts to create a special tribunal for the crime of Russian aggression against Ukraine,” said Zelensky.
The President emphasized that Britain already had a similar experience, since in London in the winter of 1942 the Declaration of St. James – “the document with which the path to the Nuremberg Tribunal began.”
At the same time, the president said that without the creation of a special tribunal, the currently available international legal instruments are not enough to hold the top political and military leadership of Russia accountable for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.
According to him, some new steps have been taken to restore justice in Ukraine and bring to justice all those responsible for this criminal war.
“We are already cooperating with many countries and international organizations so that every Russian murderer receives the appropriate punishment. We have already established cooperation with the International Criminal Court and will increase it,” he said.
The President said that Ukraine has “strong cooperation” with the Netherlands, which is helping to establish the Prosecutor’s Office to collect evidence of war crimes, and that Ukraine is cooperating with France, which is helping in the field to document the Russian crime.
“And we must unite the majority of the world in support of the draft resolution of the UN General Assembly on the special tribunal. We must build the necessary legal architecture for the tribunal to function. We must fully implement this point of our formula of peace and really ensure justice after this war, just like after the Second World War, I believe that the UK will show its leadership in this fight for justice,” he insisted.
Recall that Ukraine intends to open a temporary prosecutor’s office in one of the countries of the European Union as part of the strategy for international criminal prosecution and consolidation of evidence of war crimes committed by Russia .
It should be noted that the European Parliament approved a resolution recognizing Russia as a sponsor of terrorism and a state that uses the means of terrorism. The document during the voting was supported by an absolute majority of European parliamentarians.
