It is not common to hear the International within the social movements of the Taiwanese capital. Rather than a political message on an island where communist ideology has never taken hold, it can be seen as a sign of support for the Chinese people. On Sunday, November 27, as groups of angry citizens erupted in China, hundreds of Taiwanese gathered in Taipei’s Freedom Square to show their solidarity with protesters across the strait.
The rally, which was announced only in the afternoon, did not attract a large number of people, but it was very symbolic. Some messages in simplified Chinese characters typical of the mainland (Taiwan and Hong Kong maintain the traditional system) were scattered around a sign commemorating the victims of the Urumqi fire.
