The Turkish President commented on the talks between the leaders of the US and Russian intelligence services in Ankara.
Neither the US nor Russia is exploring options for using nuclear weapons. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said this, Anadolu reported on Thursday, November 17.
“Referring to the information of the Turkish intelligence services, I can only say that at this moment the initiative to use nuclear weapons by the parties is unexpected. Turkey, for its part, intends to intervene in the dialogue and fix the active meetings. God forbid this leads to a new world war. It is impossible to allow this,” Erdogan said.
The agency clarified that Erdogan commented in this way during the negotiations between the leaders of the US and Russian intelligence services in Ankara on November 14.
Earlier this week, US and Russian delegations were reportedly holding unannounced talks in the Turkish capital, Ankara. The Kremlin later declined to comment.
The US later said that CIA director William Burns met with the head of the Russian foreign intelligence service, Sergei Naryshkin, in Turkey to warn Russia against using nuclear weapons in Ukraine.
