President of Russia, Vladimir Putinwill not go to the G20 leaders’ summit in Bali next week, the Russian embassy in Indonesia told AFP on Thursday.
This summit on the Indonesian tourism island will be the largest G20 meeting since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in late 2019.
For the first time authority Russia confirmed Putin’s absence from this meeting, which would have brought him together with his American counterpart Joe Biden for the first time since the start of the war in Ukraine.
“I can confirm that (Foreign Minister) Sergey Lavrov will lead a delegation to the G20. The program of President Putin is still being worked out, he could participate virtually,” said Yulia Tomskaya, head of protocol at the embassy.
Rumors have circulated for months about Putin’s presence or absence at this summit, which takes place on November 15 and 16 in Bali.
Reasons for absence
After Moscow’s major military failures in Ukraine Kremlin seeks to protect its leader from Western condemnation during this meeting of the leaders of the world’s 20 major economies.
