The head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell said that the EU is concerned about the situation in the Western Balkans.
Serbia and Kosovo are on the brink of a dangerous crisis. This was said by the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, after a meeting of EU foreign ministers, where the situation in the region was discussed, reports Euractiv.
“We are very concerned about the situation in the Western Balkans,” Borrell said.
According to him, the “unnecessary and counterproductive tensions” between Kosovo and Serbia are “reaching a very, very dangerous level” and creating a situation where “we, unfortunately, are on the verge of another crisis.”
Borrell noted that this is the most serious and dangerous crisis in the past ten years, and that the departure of Serbs from Kosovo’s institutions has created a vacuum.
“The worst can happen in this vacuum, so both sides need to show more flexibility,” warned the head of European diplomacy.
It was noted that the situation in the north of the province had become more unstable in recent weeks, when members of the Serb community resigned from Kosovo institutions in protest against the government’s demand that all cars owned of Kosovo citizens have Kosovo license plates. Serbia opposes this because it continues to not recognize Kosovo’s independence.
“Kosovo Serbs must return to the institutions. The Kosovo authorities must show flexibility on the issue of license plates and work without delay to implement the agreement on the association of Serb-majority municipalities,” Borrell said.
Earlier, the EU announced the failure of negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo.
