France, Germany and other countries are selling weapons worth 350 million euros to Moscow using a hole in the EU embargo.
At least ten EU member states have exported nearly 350 million euros worth of military equipment to Russia in evasion of the embargo imposed due to the annexation of Crimea. This was reported by the British newspaper The Telegraph, citing EU data.
According to the publication, approximately 78 percent of the total supply came from German and French companies, which in 2015-2020 supplied Russia with military equipment worth more than 273 million euros.
They sent equipment to Moscow, including bombs, rockets, shells and cannons, despite the EU’s arms embargo on Russia, imposed after the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
In addition to Germany and France, Italy, Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Great Britain provided Russia with military products. Journalists suggest that the weapons received by Moscow are currently being used in the war against Ukraine. In 2021, when the Kremlin is preparing for an attack, EU countries will sell weapons and ammunition worth 39 million euros to Russia, according to European Commission data.
Since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the EU has imposed additional restrictions on the export of dual goods to Moscow. However, the hole that allowed the embargo to be avoided was only closed on April 8 under pressure from the Baltic and Eastern European member states of the European Union.
