President Vučić said he would only join European sanctions if “the sword of Damocles hangs over Serbia.”
Serbia will not impose sanctions against Russia because of the war against Ukraine. This is what Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic told reporters after meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, Pink reports.
“Serbia could change its position on imposing sanctions against Russia if the sword of Damocles was literally hanging over it. This is not the case now,” Vucic said.
According to him, Belgrade endured 270 days of “heaviest pressure” in the modern history of Serbia since the start of the war in Ukraine.
“No one knows better than me, because no one has such direct contact with Europe and the world as I do. I know better how far we can go,” he added.
Vučić also noted that he expected more resistance from the Russian military in Kherson, but he was wrong.
It was previously reported that Germany is asking Serbia to choose between the EU and the Russian Federation. Serbia must urgently decide how it sees its political future – as an EU member or a partner of Russia.
As you know, Serbia aims to join the EU. However, its further integration with Europe is impossible without the ratification of sanctions against Russia and Belarus.
