The initiative was made as part of French President Emmanuel Macron’s plan to switch to renewable energy sources.
The French Senate has approved a law mandating the installation of solar panels in existing and new car parks with 80 or more vehicles. On Wednesday, November 9, The Guardian reports.
By law, owners of car parks designed for 80-400 cars have five years to install solar panels. Owners of large parking lots will only have three years to do so.
The document requires that at least half of the car park area be covered by solar panels.
The French government believes that this innovation will generate 11 gigawatts of additional electricity.
Note that during his election as president for a second term, Macron pledged to reduce France’s harmful emissions by 40% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. The leader of the Champs-Elysées also aims to speed up construction of wind farms and solar parks in the country.
Earlier, the French leader said that Europe needs to create a new security architecture after the end of the war in Ukraine, as well as strengthen arms control.
