A bridge across the Machkha River in the town of Morbi collapsed just days after it was reopened after six months of repairs.

At least 132 people died when a footbridge collapsed in the western Indian state of Gujarat. On Monday, October 31, NDTV reports.

It was determined that 177 people were rescued. Hundreds of deaths have already been reported.

As the head of the local police told reporters, the search continues and the number of victims of the tragedy may increase.

The bridge at Machhu dam near Morbi town was built more than 140 years ago. It has been closed for renovation for two years. The bridge was opened on October 26, and on October 30 it collapsed. According to local media, at the time of the tragedy there were more than 500 people here.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the government was responsible for the collapse. The victims were promised compensation. Relatives of the victims will receive 2 million rupees (about $24,000) each, while the victims will receive 50,000 rupees (about $600).

The bridge tragedy occurred ahead of the Gujarat elections, which are expected to take place at the end of the year.

The current term of Modi’s ruling party ends in February 2023.

Around 60 victims of the bridge tragedy in India were earlier reported.
