In the past seven weeks, approximately 37,000 refugees from Ukraine have been registered in Switzerland. Almost half of them were placed in private households.
The Swiss authorities will continue the equal distribution of refugees from Ukraine to different regions of the country to reduce the burden on certain communities and regions. This was reported by Swissinfo.
“We want to create more stability for both refugees and cantonal departments responsible for social welfare or education to avoid an unequal distribution of people in need,” said David Keller from the secretariat for migration at a press conference.
According to him, cities including Zurich, Basel and Bern, as well as the Ticino region, are faced with a large influx of Ukrainians.
In the past seven weeks, approximately 37,000 refugees from Ukraine have been registered in Switzerland. Almost half of them are placed in private households thanks to the efforts of public organizations and the initiative of the private.
It was noticed that all but a few Ukrainian refugees received a special legal status: they were allowed to get a job and go to free language courses to more easily fit into the country.
It should be noted that since March 12, 2022, Switzerland has applied the status of temporary protection S for citizens of Ukraine who were forced to leave their homeland due to the war. This status grants the right to reside in Switzerland for up to one year with subsequent extension of the period of stay.
According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in addition to citizens of Ukraine and their families, the status of protection S is also granted to citizens of third countries who have left Ukraine because of the war. A prerequisite is that they have a valid residence permit in Ukraine and the impossibility of a safe return to the state of their citizenship.
However, S protection status will not apply to people who have already been granted protection status of a country in the EU. Those who have received this protection status can travel abroad and return to Switzerland without a travel permit.
Citizens of Ukraine can seek paid employment in Switzerland (including self-employment) without waiting. To do this, you need to register with the federal asylum center.
Recall that the United States has simplified admission for Ukrainian refugees.
In total, according to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, more than 4.9 million people have left Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion.
