The restrictive measures affected Russians involved in coup attempts in Moldova and Iranian officials responsible for suppressing protests in the country.
US authorities have imposed sanctions against Russian officials deemed to be involved in malicious influence and systemic corruption. Also, sanctions were imposed against officials in Iran involved in suppressing protests in the country. This was announced on Wednesday, October 26, by the press service of the US Treasury.
The “black list” includes oligarchs who have gained widespread notoriety for seizing and destroying Moldova’s political and economic institutions, as well as acting as instruments of Russia’s global influence campaign aimed at manipulating the United States United States and its allies and partners, including Moldova and Ukraine.
In particular, we are talking about the former official from Moldova, Vladimir Plahotniuc, who participated in state capture, control and manipulation of key sectors of the Moldovan government, including law enforcement agencies. Sanctions were also imposed on Moldovan politician and leader of the populist Shor party, Ilan Shor.
According to the US Treasury Department, in the run-up to Moldovan elections in 2021, Russia planned to undermine the position of Moldovan President Maia Sandu and return Moldova to Russia’s sphere of influence. To support these efforts, Shor worked with representatives of the Russian Federation to create a political alliance to control the Moldovan parliament, which then supported several legislative acts in favor of the Russian Federation. Sanctions were also imposed on Shor’s wife, Russian singer Sarah Lvovna Shor, better known under the pseudonym Jasmine.
In addition, Igor Yuryevich Chaika, who is the son of the former Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yuri Chaika, fell under the restriction. According to the US, Igor Chaika, together with the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, developed detailed plans to overthrow the power of the President of Moldova. The US sanctions list includes many legal entities owned by Igor Chaika.
Also under restrictions are officials from Iran, which the United States holds responsible for the country’s crackdown on protests and continued Internet censorship. The list includes the leadership of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, officials from Sistan and Balochistan provinces, and Iranian prison officials.
It will be remembered that in 2019, the oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc and the politician Ilan Shor fled to Moldova.
Earlier it was reported that the EU imposed anti-Iranian sanctions for the supply of drones to the Russian Federation.
