The publication reported that on April 21, Finnish parliamentarians met in Stockholm with the Speaker of the Swedish Parliament Andreas Norlen, representatives of the committees for foreign affairs and defense, as well as Foreign Minister Ann Linde and Defense Minister Peter Hultkvist.
“I informed the Swedish side that in Finland the majority of citizens are in favor of NATO membership. This means that we will send an application to join the Alliance in the coming weeks, in the spring. I said this even considering- I consider it a good thing or a bad thing “said Tuomioya.
According to Tuomioja, it will be important for Finland and Sweden to jointly resolve all issues on joining NATO.
After World War II, the Finnish authorities feared that the USSR would try to infiltrate it into the bloc of socialist countries and influence its policy. Therefore, he declared neutrality. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Finland became a member of the EU in 1995.
The country has also been cooperating with NATO since 1994 and joined the Enhanced Opportunities Partnership in 2014.
Earlier, the President of Ukraine said that Ukraine’s accession to NATO is one of the components of the right to choose sovereignty.
