One contender remained for the position of head of government, who would be the leader of the conservative party.
Rishi Sunak is the new prime minister of the UK. This was learned on Monday, October 24, after the leader of the House of Commons, Penny Mordaunt, withdrew her candidacy.
“Rishi Sunak has been chosen as the new leader of the Conservative Party,” said Sir Graham Brady, head of the House of Commons “1922 committee” which oversees the process of selecting a new leader.
Mordont himself said he withdrew his candidacy for the election, saying that, therefore, “we have chosen our new prime minister”, noting that he strongly supports Sunak.
On the eve of participating in the elections, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson refused.
Recall that British Prime Minister Liz Truss resigned last week after only 45 days in office.
